2 MORE WEEKS OF TERM AND UNTIL THE HOLIDAY BUDDY READER, ART & SPORT PROGRAMME AT DCS
We have 2 weeks left of term - Monday 3rd & 4th of June & Tuesday 4th & 11th of June where lessons will run as usual. We have already started to say goodbye to some of our volunteers who are making their way home for a northern hemisphere summer! Safe Travels!
Volunteers will meet Gillean on Monday and Jenny on Tuesday at Piatto's at 8:30am to car pool to Diepsloot. Please read the basic lesson plans for Monday and Tuesday below and attached. The attached documents are relevant to the 3 day holiday programme as well.
We then have our Holiday Programmewhich will run for 3 consecutive days on Tuesday 18 June, Wednesday 19 June and Thursday 20 June from 9am to 1pm (meeting outside Piatto's at 8:30am daily). Details and a wish list are included below. Please reply to this email if you're able to join us on one or all of these days.
Note the "Dates to Diarise" at the bottom of the email. After the holiday programme, lessons will then resume on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th July 2019.
Our First Fundraiser for all our partner projects raised R50 033 which means each project will receive R10 066. A separate email has been sent out to everyone who attended or contributed to our recent Fundraiser. We also have two lovely photographs - one framed and one print that are still available for sale.
We had a very successful 3-day Teaching Challenge this week. Photos and feedback can also be seen below.
Holiday Buddy Reader, Sport and Art Programme - Volunteers needed 18 to 20 June 2019
We are seeking volunteer support for our upcoming Holiday Programme. Edu Fun, in partnership with Read For Africa and St Peter's School will run the annual Holiday Programme at Diepsloot Combined School (DCS) from 8:30am to 1pm daily on Tuesday 18 June, Wednesday 19 June and Thursday 20 June 2018.
We are needing up to 50 volunteers each day to work with small groups of learners and assist with reading, at and sport.
Thank you to St Peter's for their continued support and for arranging for their Intern teachers to be available to assist us on these days.
The programme aims to help DCS learners in Grades 2 and 3 who are struggling with English literacy. By providing personalised support, we can make a tremendous impact on the students.
We will meet daily at 8:30 a.m. at Piatto's in Dainfern Valley to carpool to the school.
Volunteers who cannot commit to all three days are welcome to come for one or two days. Volunteers are welcome to bring their teenage children, friends, partners and others who would like to assist. We are able to verify community hours if required.
Younger children are welcome to join in and participate in the actual activities alongside the DCS learners in the art and sports classes and can also be buddy readers with the younger children.
We realise that we are always asking you, our key supporters for help whether is be of your time or financial assistance. We know that many of you have recently donated money towards our fundraiser last month and have participated in the recent 3-day teaching challenge, however several of you have asked what we need for the upcoming holiday programme, so we include our wish list below.
If you can assist by adding one of the items listed below to your next shop and bring the item to Piatto's on a Monday/Tuesday morning, over the next two weeks, it will go a long way to save as much money as possible for other stationery and educational needs of the children.
Holiday Programme Wish List - this list is also attached a separate document
We are also seeking cash donations. The cost to attend the programme equates to ZAR300 per learner. We appreciate any support you may wish to offer. Cash donations can be transferred into our bank account, or you can follow this link to pay by credit card.
Another useful way to support this programme is by giving a Pick n Pay voucher for R100 for example if you are in a position to do so. Pick n Pay Boskruin usually provide us will rolls and oranges for free (letter has been sent for repeat donation) and then we purchase Simply Chicken Sausages from them, so the vouchers will be useful.

Teaching Programme this coming week - Monday 27 May and Tuesday 28 May 2019
Monday 1 June 2019
We work with 200 + Grade 2 learners every Monday. All the children have been assessed and have been grouped into ability levels.
Most of the groups are working in the Pink Level of our programme, building and manipulating 3 sound words. The basic lesson plans and worksheets are attached to give you an idea of how we teach as well as the words that we will cover.
We try to allocate volunteers to the same group each week. If your name is not included below, then you will be assigned to a group on Monday. If you are attending for the first time with a friend, we will allocate you to the same group.
The groups will be as follows
The Pink group will be with Jenny and Ms Magalefa in the 2a classroom. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, but starting with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o , p, m, s, f. Volunteers:
The Blue group will be with Gillean and Ms Mothapo in the Grade 2b classroom. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, but starting with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o, p, m, s, f.
The Green Group will be with Sachi and Ms Makgoba in Grade 2c. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, continuing with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o and p, m, s, f,. They will be moving on to the d, u, g.
The Purple Group will be with Jeanne and Nthabiseng
The Orange Group will be in the container classroom with Judy Viljoen who has kindly offered to fill in for Meghan this coming week. They are working on the Green Level, where some sound pictures can have more than one letter such as the sh, ch, ck etc.
Where possible, volunteers will work with the same groups each week. New volunteers will be assigned before the lesson and sometimes volunteers will be asked to assist a different group to try and balance the number of volunteers in each group.
We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30 outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and will be back in Dainfern by 10:30/10:45
Gillean will be the meeting person at Piatto's.
Tuesday 2 June 2019
Volunteers work with small groups of Grade 3 learners on Tuesdays. Each volunteer is allocated to 3 or 4 learners at similar ability levels. Regular volunteers will be assigned to the same group of learners each week.
The Tuesday programme is a great opportunity for volunteers to work towards their international certification as a Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist. We work in small groups and work through the programme systematically teaching children to read from 3 and 4 sound words on wards. We currently have 4 of our volunteers working on their internship.
All groups will start on the Pink Level focusing on 3 sound words. The following techniques are followed each lesson which are elaborated on in the attached lesson plans.
Volunteers meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 10:30am.
Spread a Little Love with the AKA Sorority
The AKA team continue to spread a whole lot of love every Monday and supply over 200 peanut butter sandwiches to DCS to supplement their feeding scheme.
AKA are going to focus on supplying peanut butter sandwiches and so our Edu Fun volunteers are requested to supply a bag of apples on a Monday when they can.

On-going Campaigns - please share this information with your friends and colleagues
The Global Giving and MySchool platforms have increased our fundraising potential as these are both platforms that make it very easy for our supporters to give us money.
Click on ether of the images below to find out more about both of these campaigns. If you have a Woolworths card, you can very easily link it to our MySchool campaign which means Woolworths will give Edu Fun money every time you swipe your card, at NO cost to you.

OUR PARTNER AND ANCILLARY PROJECTS
Ngangifisa and the Food Pantry
Ngangifisa supports 12 of the most vulnerable families in DCS. Within these 12 families there are 55 children. Most have lost one or both parents to violence, disease or simply been abandoned.
On the last Wednesday of every month we meet with the eldest child in each family. We share a meal with them, provide emotional support and give them a month’s worth of non-perishable food. Go to ngangifisa.com to learn more or contact us at email@example.com. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
The Baby Club supports young mums, their babies and children at a crèche that they work with that is close to DCS. The aim is to ensure that these teenage mums stay in school and finish matric despite having the additional responsibility of having to look after a child.
This group mend school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They also provide new school shoes when funds allow. They have recently added shoe polishing to their services which will help protect the shoes for longer and also give some of the school shoes a face lift before needing to be replaced altogether!
Health Project - Eyesight, Dental, Nutrition checks
We provide health, eye and dental screenings to all students at the school. We meet every Tuesday at 8.00am at the Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre returning around 11.00am. It is not essential for volunteers to have medical training. During the screening, children are identified and referred to the appropriate health professional for follow-up. For more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please contact Jenny on 082 322 0608 or email email@example.com if you have any general queries. You can also contact the relevant person mentioned above for specific projects or events.
Please see the dates to diarise at the bottom of this newsletter for the rest of this term.
