Lessons Resume this coming week - Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th April 2019

Newsletter 19 January 2020

Hello Visitor,

Our lessons at DCS resume on Monday and Tuesday. Please read the basic lesson plans for Monday and Tuesday below and attached.  Volunteers will meet Gillean on Monday at 9am and Jenny at 8:30 on Tuesday at Piatto's to car pool to Dainfern.

We were fortunate to have a few new volunteers join us at DCS towards the end of last term and we have a few new people joining us this coming week which is exciting! Please continue to invite your friends to join us on Mondays and Tuesdays as we need more volunteers to be able to support the unprecedented number of learners in Grade 2 and Grade 3.

Priya Sen will be leaving South Africa this month and we therefore invite you to join us for tea/coffee on Monday at Piatto's at about 11am. Priya has has been volunteering with Edu Fun for several years and has been involved in our  Tuesday literacy programme, Ngangifisa - Food Pantry as well as with our Saturday Buddy Reader Programme.

We have a lot planned for the new term which has already started for a group of Edu Fun and Read for Africa volunteers in Wakkerstroom.

Those of you who follow our Facebook page would have seen that we were in Wakkerstroom this week replicating our Edu Fun/Read For Africa model in a rural Township School on the border of Mpumalanga and KZN.

You can also find us on  Instagram - follow

Thank you to Gillean, Meghan and Sachi who have been absolutely amazing this week and have transferred their love and knowledge of the Diepsloot programme into this community and have given of their own time and resources. It proves time and time again that reading can be taught with very little money and few resources when local teachers and volunteers collaborate using the Phono-Graphix reading method.

The Rotary Club of Sandton have facilitated a large donation of LEGO for Diepsloot Combined School and will be delivering over 500 packs to Diepsloot on Tuesday (9th April). If you volunteer on a Tuesday and are able to stay a bit later than usual, it would be great if you could assist us with the distribution of the sets. They are due to arrive between 10:30 and 11 on Tuesday.

The Food Pantry distribution with
Ngangifisa takes place this week. See details below and visit their website at ngangifisa.com

REMINDER - we also have our FIRST Annual Fundraiser next month on Saturday 11 May at St Peter's Preparatory School at 6:30pm for 7pm. See details below.

Teaching Programme this coming week - Monday 8 April and Tuesday 9 April 2019

Monday 8 April 2019

We work with 200 + Grade 2 learners every Monday. All the children have been assessed and have been grouped into ability levels.

Most of the groups are working in the Pink Level of our programme, building and manipulating 3 sound words. The basic lesson plans and worksheets are attached to give you an idea of how we teach as well as the words that we will cover.

We try to allocate volunteers to the same group each week. If your name is not included below, then you will be assigned to a group on Monday. If you are attending for the first time with a friend, we will allocate you to the same group.

The groups will be as follows

  • The Pink group will be with Jenny and Ms Magalefa in the 2a classroom. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, but starting with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o , p, m, s, f. Volunteers: Annika, Eva, Dudu, Jacqui
  • The Blue group will be with Gillean and Ms Mothapo in the Grade 2b classroom. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, but starting with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o, p, m, s, f.   Volunteers: Claire, Angela, Carol, Jade
  • The Green Group will be with Sachi and Ms Makgoba in Grade 2c. The focus here will be on 3 sound words, continuing with the first few letters of the programme c, a, t, o and p, m, s, f,. They will be moving on to the d, u, g. Volunteers: Judy , Mirriam, Hans, Allyson
  • The Purple Group will be with Jutta, Jeanne and Nthabiseng.
  • The Orange Group will be in the container classroom with Meghan This group will be finishing off the Blue Level of the programme - 4 sound words and will be moving onto the Green Level, where some sound pictures can have more than one letter such as the sh, ch, ck etc. Volunteers: Judy Viljoen.

We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 11am.

Gillean will be the meeting person at Piatto's as Jenny will be going straight through to the school.

Please note: We will meet at Piatto's after class to say farewell to Priya Sen from 11am.

Tuesday 9 April 2019

Volunteers work with small groups of Grade 3 learners on Tuesdays. Each volunteer is allocated to 3 or 4 learners at similar ability levels.  Regular volunteers will be assigned to the same group of learners each week.

The Tuesday programme is a great opportunity for volunteers to work towards their international certification as a Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist. We work in small groups and work through the programme systematically teaching children to read from 3 and 4 sound words on wards.  We currently have 4 of our volunteers working on their internship.

All groups will start on the Pink Level focusing on 3 sound words. The following techniques are followed each lesson which are elaborated on in the attached lesson plans.
  • Word building
  • Phoneme Manipulation
  • Word Reading
  • Word Spelling

Volunteers meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 10:30am.

Please note: A group of us will be staying on a bit later than usual due to the Lego delivery. It would be great if you can stay a bit later than usual, but we will arrange that a group go back at the normal time if people can't stay.

The Phono-Graphix Reading Method

Our English literacy lessons are based on Read for Africa's Phono-Graphix Reading and Spelling method. We do run volunteer workshops from time to time and volunteers are welcome to attend more in-depth training in the method with Read For Africa.

If you have not managed to attend an introductory workshop and are not able to, you can follow this YouTube link to learn more about the Phono-Graphix Reading method and about teaching reading in a South African context.

The video clip takes you through the 4 key principles behind the programme as well as discusses a few topical debates such as learning how to read in one's mother tongue versus English. You can fast forward to the end where you will see a demonstration on how words are built and how we do Buddy Reading.

Spread a Little Love with the AKA Sorority

The AKA team continue to spread a whole lot of love every Monday and supply over 200 peanut butter sandwiches to DCS to supplement their feeding scheme.

AKA are going to focus on supplying peanut butter sandwiches and so our Edu Fun volunteers are requested to supply a bag of apples on a Monday when they can.

On-going Campaigns - please share this information with your friends and colleagues

The Global Giving and MySchool platforms have increased our fundraising potential as these are both platforms that make it very easy for our supporters to give us money.

Click on ether of the images below to find out more about both of these campaigns. If you have a Woolworths card, you can very easily link it to our MySchool campaign which means Woolworths will give Edu Fun money every time you swipe your card, at NO cost to you.

We have bought all our stationery for this term from Walton's as they are also a My School partner - so please keep this in mind when buying all your stationery.

Thank you to many of you who have already linked your cards and are already swiping away with your card so that Edu Fun can benefit.

Estimated Budget and Stationery needs for our 2019 Grade 2 and 3 Literacy Programme

We estimate that we will need an ambitious R171 000 to accommodate up to 380 Grade 2 and 3 learners this year. Our latest proposal and break down of estimated costs is attached.

Our biggest expense is stationery and printing. If you have any contacts and could arrange toner/cartridges and ordinary A4 photocopy paper, we would be most grateful as this would be a huge saving.

If you do have any corporate contacts, it would be great if you reminded them about Edu Fun and the work that we do. Please let them know that we are BEE compliant and can issue Tax certificates.

Please follow this link for more information or to see how you can make a donation.

Our official registration numbers etc. are available at this page as well. Please email info@edufunsa.co.za if you would like additional information or supporting documents.

Ngangifisa and the Food Pantry

Ngangifisa usually distribute monthly groceries to a group of the most vulnerable families in Diepsloot on the last Wednesday of each month, Many of these children have lost one or both parents and in some cases come from child headed homes. Ngangifisa will do their next distribution on Wednesday 10 April at 11am due to the school holidays and Easter.

A donation of R350 a month pays for a family to receive a month's worth of groceries. Go to ngangifisa.com to find out more or to make a donation.

Baby Club

The Baby Club supports young mums, their babies and children at a  crèche that they work with that is close to DCS. The aim is to ensure that these teenage mums stay in school and finish matric despite having the additional responsibility of having to look after a child.

To find out more about the Baby Club and to see photos of their recent party follow this link to their Facebook page.

The Top Up Project - Mending School Uniforms

This group mend school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They also provide new school shoes when funds allow. They have recently added shoe polishing to their services which will help protect the shoes for longer and also give some of the school shoes a face lift before needing to be replaced altogether!
