Hello ,
We are all set for Mandela Day celebrations tomorrow! We will be at the Hub at DCS from 8:30am to 11am
We will be
1. distributing food parcels to DCS families most in need
2. providing lunch for all the children/past pupils present
3. distributing meals-in-a-bag for these families as well as our mini-hub leaders to give to the kids at their satellite hubs in their various communities whilst they are not able to come to school.
4. distributing clothes that have been donated by many of you over recent months
5. sorting all the Grade 2 Edu Fun exercise books and worksheets that have not been used since March so that the teachers can resume with the lessons when the Grade 2s come back to school. (They’re due back on a rotational basis in a few weeks’ time.)
6. distributing masks
Thank you to everyone who has helped prepare things for tomorrow. Anne and Judy for arranging and sewing the masks; Louise and Gayle for preparing "Meals-in-a-bag", Nopinki and Nelly for collecting all the food parcels at Makro and to Annie at KosOnline for personally delivering the food Parcels donated by the AKA Sorority and the Baby Club. Thank you too for the donations that came in this week from many of YOU including our friends at WOW & the Baby Club.

No single person can liberate a country.
You can only liberate a country if you act as a collective.

All these initiatives are on-going so please consider supporting us this Mandela Day and beyond ...

1. Prepare and share meals-in-bag for all learners participating in any of our activities whether it be at the school or in the various communities where our satellite hubs are in operation. Instructions: make up a ziploc bag (180mm by 190mm) containing - half a cup of rice; half a cup of soup mix / split peas, half cup lentils, 1 unwrapped stock cube, 1 opened packet of soup powder
2. Volunteer Virtually – we are starting to give Grade 4 children English Enrichment classes via Zoom. Nopinki facilitates this from the hub on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons. These are the top 20 English readers from our Grade 3 group last year. The idea is to keep them motivated and learning during lockdown and beyond. Our sessions will be focusing on English Enrichment (vocabulary, comprehension and spelling). These are conducted one on one via Zoom from your own room!
3. Assist with setting up our mentoring programme to match mentors and mentees to assist high school learners and past pupils with their subject and career choices. Mentor past pupils from Diepsloot to become hub leaders and provide regular literacy instruction to DCS Grade 2 (and other learners) in the local community that they live in. This requires educational resources, stationary as well as additional sanitisers, masks and food.
4. Sponsor food parcels for DCS learners via KosOnline to ensure that those most in need get fresh food as well as other essential fortified food items. We are registered on the following site as a beneficiary. https://kosonline.co.za/product/edufun-diepsloot/

5. Donate money to Edu Fun to cover the associated expenses with all of the above, including Shoprite Virtual Vouchers, additional food parcels, worksheets & stationery, sanitisers, masks etc. so that we can continue to support our learners during lockdown and beyond

Thank YOU
In the words of Mandela:
“I like friends who have independent minds because they tend
to make you see problems from all angles.”
Edu Fun continues to choose its friends wisely – Thank YOU for the continued support during lockdown – all the WhatsApps, Emails, Zoom brainstorming sessions and donations that enable us to collectively re-imagine and adapt our delivery in collaboration with the teachers.

Please share this newsletter with your friends, families and colleagues who may be looking for a charity to support this Mandela Day.
Thank You
Jenny
