Grade 3 Zoo Trip on Monday 10 Sept and Grade 2 Lessons on Tuesday 111 Sept

Newsletter 23 May 2019
Hello Visitor,

Our annual Zoo trip takes place on Monday with the Grade 3 learners and then we will be celebrating Literacy Week with the Grade 2s on Tuesday.

Please see "Dates to Diarise" at the end of this newsletter to see what is scheduled for the remaining 3 months of the school year.

The Week Ahead ... International Literacy Week

We are looking forward to a very busy Edu Fun week starting off this Saturday  with International Literacy Day coinciding with our Saturday Buddy Reader programme starting up again.

We are excited to announce that we are resuming Saturday school lessons this Saturday 8 September. Twenty learners from grade 2 have been identified and invited to participate. The programme will be led by Ms. Mphaka, DCS grade 3 teacher with assistance from several Ms Dladla and Ms Sekoele and other DCS teachers. All lesson materials will be provided by Edu Fun. Volunteers are welcome to come and assist as their schedule allows. The program will run from 9:00 - 10:15 on these dates September 8, 15, 22/ October 13, 20, 27/ November 3, 10. For anyone who would like to join this Saturday, please meet Jenny at Piatto's to depart for school by 8:45 a.m.

Zoo Trip - Monday 10 September

Here are the details for our zoo trip on Monday 10 September.

Looking forward to a great day!

If you'd like to carpool and meet at Piatto's please be there and ready to depart no later than 8:20 a.m. Gillean will lead the group from Piatto's to the Joburg zoo. Those who wish to meet at the Joburg zoo, please arrive at the Upper Park Drive zoo entrance ready to meet the kids no later than 9:00 a.m. We will assign 6-10 kids per volunteer (depending on the number of volunteers we have.) We will provide coloured arm bands to help you keep track of your group. You may want to review a map of the zoo and print a copy at home to bring. A copy of the map is attached. Volunteers will need to pay a ZAR40 entry fee (parking costs ZAR16) to enter the zoo.

Money should be paid to Jenny on the morning as she will pay on behalf of all of us as one combined payment needs to be made at the same time in order to qualify for  the group discount.

The kids will receive free zoo entry again this year, which is a saving of
ZAR8 000.00.

Volunteers will lead the kids around the Zoo from 9:15 until 11:15 a.m. Then, bring the kids back to the amphitheatre area by 11:15 a.m. for lunch. Edu Fun will provide lunch for the kids. Volunteers should bring water, snacks for themselves.

We are also needing as many volunteers as possible to come to the Zoo and assist us on the day. Please invite any friends and family as the more volunteers there are to chaperone smaller groups of children the more manageable, educational and fun the event will be. If you are able to attend, please RSVP on our Facebook event page at this link to confirm that you will join us.

Thank you to the following people / organisations who have contributed to the Zoo trip

  • Lucy Taylor - for facilitating free entry into the Zoo  yet again as well as arranging for over 200 oranges being donated.
  • Tyrone Fruiterers in Parkview for donating the oranges.
  • Joburg City Parks and the Joburg Zoo for free entrance into the zoo for the kids
  • Tracy Whitfield of the AKA Sorority for "spreading a little love" and making sandwiches for all the children on Monday.
  • Abbi Davenport, Judtih Wonderschüt and Angela Thomas for donating PnP vouchers towards cost of refreshments on Monday.
  • Gayle Ouzman for facilitating a donation of wristbands from Wesley Brink of Promoyard so that we can colour code the various groups of children on Monday.
  • Bus 2000 Bus Services for providing the busses at a discounted fee.

Literacy Week Celebration - Tuesday 11 September 2018

We will celebrate literacy week at DCS on Tuesday 11 September with the all the grade 2 classes. The learners will remain in their regular classrooms for a special lesson to be led by Edu Fun volunteers and St. Peter's interns. All Edu Fun volunteers will join Sachi in one classroom to lead the lesson. The lesson will be focused around the book, The Hungry Caterpillar, a well-known story for children.

Sachi will read the story to the class, pausing to ask questions to ensure the learners are understanding the story, As she reads volunteers will show the illustrations in the book (we will have multiple copies of the book in each classroom) to the children. We will also have a large toy caterpillar in each room for volunteers to show the children. Sachi will then teach the kids a song (see this YouTube link) and volunteers will assist (lyrics attached.) Next, the students will colour in a caterpillar which they make take home.

Finally, to cap off our celebration, each child will get a book and some stickers to take home.  We are looking forward to this fun and unique event, please take and share your photos with us so we can share on our Edu Fun Facebook page and website.

Woolworths MySchool Programme - Edu Fun Provisionally accepted

As you know,  Edu Fun has been provisionally accepted into the Woolworth's MySchool programme. We are still needing a number of applications to meet our quota. Please consider applying for a MySchool card and making Edu Fun one of your beneficiaries.

Woolworth's donates over 600 million rand a month to schools and other charities through this programme. Shoppers swipe their free MySchool or linked Woolworth's card at the till when shopping at Woolworth's and at over 1500 partner stores. A portion of the amount spent is then automatically donated by Woolworth's or the partner store to the charity.
In order to be fully accepted into the programme we are seeking a minimum of 50 supporters to list Edu Fun as one of their chosen charity beneficiaries. Each card allows for up to three beneficiaries to be selected and the funds are split evenly and automatically among the chosen beneficiaries.
We will have paper applications when we meet for school at Piatto's on Monday and Tuesday. We need to gather completed paper applications and submit to Woolworth's by courier in a batch to ensure our application is approved.  We hope you will consider making Edu Fun your beneficiary or one of your beneficiaries. Please bring your current MySchool card to Piatto's (if you have) to ease the completion of your application if you'd like to support this effort. You will need your ID/Passport number as well. Note, you can have two forms from the same family.

We will be finalising this process and will be available on Monday and Tuesday to to receive any new applications and answer any questions that you might have. The last day we can accept applications to meet our deadline is Monday 17 September and / or Tuesday 18 September 2018.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support!

Sponsor a Learner (or Multiple Learners) at DCS

We are excited to share a new page that has been added to our website showing the grade three learners that may be sponsored by donors.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a learner or put sponsors in touch with us. We now have several more learners who have been sponsored through this initiative via the GlobalGiving campaign. The GlobalGiving platform has made it very easy for our supporters who live abroad (or have bank accounts abroad :-) to make donations using their credit card.

A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs Edu Fun incurs for stationery, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year.

Please contact if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.

You can also make a donation via GlobalGiving at this link:
