Our English reading lessons continue as usual on Monday and Tuesday. The basic lesson plans and times are included below and the worksheets are attached.
Please see "Dates to Diarise" below at the end of this newsletter as we have added a few new events such as our celebrations around International Literacy Day, our annual trip to the Zoo as well as our weekly teaching programme.
The Week that Was ...
Gillean Smallreceived her International Certification as the first Edu Fun Volunteer to become an accredited Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist. Well done Gillean!!
Liza Munson returned from the USA ... and resumed her duties as the Lead Volunteer for the Green Group. As you would have noticed on Facebook, our revised website and through other communication, ALL her other duties continued from afar. Good to have you back Liza!!
Sue Huck celebrated her 60th birthday last week and is now back in the UK preparing for her birthday fundraiser in honour of Edu Fun. Thank you Sue for your continued love and support of Edu Fun and DCS.
Zoo Trip - Monday 10 September
Our annual zoo trip is coming up on Monday 10 September! It is sure to be a fun event and we hope all of you can join us.
We are still seeking about ZAR300 in Pick 'n Pay gift cards to help offset our costs for lunch for the learners. If you would like to donate a gift card towards this, please give it to Liza or Jenny on Monday or Tuesday or contact us should you not be coming to school but would like to donate. Thanks in advance for your support!
It would be great if some of our Tuesday volunteers could join as at the Zoo on Monday 10 September as well.
Thank you for all of your support of Edu Fun! We hope to see you on 10 September.
Woolworths MySchool Programme - Edu Fun Provisionally accepted
As you know, Edu Fun has been provisionally accepted into the Woolworth's MySchool programme. We are still needing a number of applications to meet our quota. Please consider applying for a MySchool card and making Edu Fun one of your beneficiaries.
Thank you Sue Huck for co-ordinating and gathering the applications that have come in to date.
Liza will be finalising this process and will be available on Monday and Tuesday to receive any new applications and answer any questions that you might have.
Woolworth's donates over 600 million rand a month to schools and other charities through this programme. Shoppers swipe their free MySchool or linked Woolworth's card at the till when shopping at Woolworth's and at over 1500 partner stores. A portion of the amount spent is then automatically donated by Woolworth's or the partner store to the charity.
In order to be fully accepted into the programme we are seeking a minimum of 50 supporters to list Edu Fun as one of their chosen charity beneficiaries. Each card allows for up to three beneficiaries to be selected and the funds are split evenly and automatically among the chosen beneficiaries.
We will have paper applications when we meet for school at Piatto's starting on Monday and Tuesday. We need to gather completed paper applications and submit to Woolworth's by courier in a batch to ensure our application is approved. We hope you will consider making Edu Fun your beneficiary or one of your beneficiaries. Please bring your current MySchool card to Piatto's (if you have) to ease the completion of your application if you'd like to support this effort. You will need your ID/Passport number as well.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
Sponsor a Learner (or Multiple Learners) at DCS
Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a learner or put sponsors in touch with us. We now have several more learners who have been sponsored through this initiative via the GlobalGiving campaign. The GlobalGiving platform has made it very easy for our supporters who live abroad (or have bank accounts abroad :-) to make donations using their credit card.
A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs Edu Fun incurs for stationery, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year.
Please contact Liza@readforafrica.com if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.
Our English literacy lessons are based on the Phono-Graphix Reading method. We do run volunteer workshops from time to time and volunteers are welcome to attend more in-depth training in the method with Read For Africa. Email email@example.com for more information.
The video clip takes you through the 4 key principles behind the programme as well as discusses a few topical debates such as learning how to read in your mother tongue versus English.
There is also a practical demonstration of word building and buddy reading towards the end of the video.
MONDAY 3 SEPTEMBER 2018
The learners should be grouped in the various classes before we arrive and we will continue with lessons as usual with the Grade 3s.
On Monday, we will
Hand out the books and name tags to each learner.
Team leaders and volunteers to greet the learners and play any ice breaker games - e.g. Simon Says, Kiddies Yoga etc.
Activities will focus on revision of the sounds covered towards the end of last term and include:
Phono-Graphix reading and spelling activities differentiated per group. I've attached a basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons for the pink and blue levels of the programme (working with 3 and 4 sound words) as well as an information sheet on the method. These are the basic steps that are currently being following in the Pink, Blue and Green groups where we are revising 3 and 4 sound words. etc. The Purple Group working are starting to work on slightly more advanced words where sounds are represented with more than one letter such as the sh, ch, th, and the Orange Group have moved on to variation in the English code where sounds can be represented in several ways such as the "o-e" being represented by oe. o-e, oa, ow or o.
Some revision of the sounds covered last term will be done at the start of the lesson and new work will be introduced. Groups for Monday: Please see the worksheet(s) attached for your relevant group.
Pink Groupwith Jenny in Ms Mphahlele’s class (3B). Working on 4 sound words (Blue level lesson plans attached).

Orange Groupwith Ms Mphaka in her class (3C) for a few weeks while Meghan is away. Revision of the "a-e" sound (Worksheets attached.)
Where possible we like to encourage volunteers to work with the same group of children each week to encourage consistency and so that one can build up a rapport with specific leaners. However, there may be times where we need to re-allocate volunteers if we are short of volunteers on a particular day.
We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 11am.
TUESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2018
Volunteers will continue to work with the same small groups of children building 3 sound words. A basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons for the pink and blue levels of the programme is attached. The Pink and blue levels focus on 3 and 4 sound words.

We will have a special celebration of literacy with the Grade 2 students on 11 September to coincide with International Literacy Week. The theme is the "Hungry Caterpillar" .... watch this space.
Please continue to "Spread a Little Love" when you can on Mondays
We continue to make peanut butter sandwiches as well donate bags of apples every Monday to supplement the school's feeding programme. Please assist when you can by bringing a loaf of sandwiches and/or a bag of apples. Thank you to our volunteers as well as the AKA Sorority for their consistent support of this project.
Ngangifisa usually distribute monthly groceries to a group of the most vulnerable families in Diepsloot on the last Wednesday of each month. Many of these children have lost one or both parents and in some cases come from child headed homes.
Karin and Veronika run the "Top Up" Project at DCS with Nopinki and Tinyiko who are past pupils. This group mend school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They welcome volunteers from 10am to 12:30pm every Tuesday.
Please contact Arlene and Dominique on firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like more information about the Health Club and how you can get involved in the new term. This group does eyesight and dental checks with the learners as well as provide nutritional and other guidance.
Whilst having qualified doctors and dentists and other health practitioners on the team is a bonus, one does not need to be qualified to assist.
Our "Dates to Diarise" for the rest of the school year are below. We only have 3 weeks of lessons this term - Monday 3, 10, 17 September. There will be no lessons on Monday 10th as we will be at the zoo.
