Newsletter 16 December 2018
Hello Visitor,

Monday and Tuesday will be our last lessons for the term. We then have our Holiday Programme in the last week of June from Tuesday 26 June to Thursday 28 June.

On Monday 11 June our FANTASTIC Edu Fun fundraising opportunity with Global Giving begins!

We are hoping that you will help us reach the audacious goal of raising $5000 online via our Edu Fun Global Giving fundraising between June 11 and June 29. You can help by donating yourself and sharing the donation link with your American and UK based* friends via social media and email.

IF we can raise $5000 via credit card donations online through Global Giving June 11-29 from at least 40 unique donors, Edu Fun will become a permanent Global Giving partner. *All donations made via global giving are tax deductible for donors in both the USA and the UK (and UK means England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland in case you didn't know.)

We will share our online fundraising page link and post it on  our Edu Fun Facebook starting Monday 11 June. Please contact Liza with any questions. Thanks in advance for your generous support!

Please see "Dates to Diarise" below at the end of this newsletter which also lists other upcoming events and important dates.

Holiday Sport, Art and Buddy Reader Programme - 26 - 28 June 2018

We are seeking volunteer support for our upcoming Holiday Programme. Edu Fun, in Partnership with Read For Africa and St Peter's School will run the annual Holiday Programme at Diepsloot Combined School (DCS) from 8:30am to 1pm daily on Tuesday 26 June, Wednesday 27 June and Thursday 28 June 2018.

We are seeking 50 volunteers each day to work with small groups of learners
and assist with reading.

The programme aims to help DCS learners in grades 2 and 3 who are struggling with English literacy. By providing personalized support, we can make a tremendous impact on the students.

We will meet daily at 8:30 a.m. at Piatto's in Dainfern Valley to carpool to the school. Volunteers who cannot commit to all three days are welcome to come for one or two days. Volunteers are welcome to bring their teenage children, friends, partners and others who would like to assist.

All volunteers must pre-register via our Facebook page. If you are able to help, please click this link and let us know which days you will volunteer. https://www.facebook.com/events/2002368126480914/

We are also in need of the following items for donation. If you are able to help with an item or a portion of quantity on the list below, please reply to this email and I will make arrangement to collect from you in advance of the programme. Thanks in advance for your generous support.

- five soccer balls (inflated)
- five net balls (inflated)
- five hundred rubbish bags (we will use as aprons/smocks in the art room)
- 100 oranges or apples (these we need someone to secure and bring to school on Tuesday 26 morning only)

We are also seeking cash donations. The cost to attend the programme equates to ZAR300 per learner. We appreciate any support you may wish to offer.

Saturday School programme Tomorrow - 9 June 2018

Our Saturday School Buddy Reader Programme has run over the last 8 weeks and we have our last session for the term tomorrow.

All volunteers, spouses, kids and friends who would like to help grade 3 learners with reading are welcome. Those who wish to carpool should meet at Piatto’s in Dainfern Valley. The group will depart Dainfern Valley promptly at 8:45. If you wish to meet the group at DCS the lessons will begin at 9:00 and end at 10:15.

All Pink Level Grade 3 learners have been invited to attend in an effort to improve their literacy.

All workbooks and stationery will be provided.

NOTE: Lessons will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and will end at 10:15.

Sponsor a Learner (or Multiple Learners) at DCS

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored a learner this term. We now have 31 learners who have been sponsored to date.

All of our Edu Fun volunteers display tremendous commitment and dedication to helping DCS students improve their reading, writing and spelling skills. In addition to teaching the Phono-Graphix method, volunteers and learners form bonds throughout the year not only during lessons but through social Edu Fun activities such as the zoo trip and annual Christmas party.

The hard work of Edu Fun volunteers is reaping rewards for learners. In 2017 assessment scores showed that over the course of the school year grade 3 student reading skills improved by 60% and spelling skills improved by 73%.

Volunteers who form bonds with specific learners are welcome to select the children (by name) who they would like to sponsor. If you have friends or contacts who don't come to school with us or who live abroad who might be interested in sponsoring a child or children, we can also put together photos and bios of learners and we are happy to update donors with information about the progress of those they have sponsored at various points throughout the school year.

A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs Edu Fun incurs for stationery, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year. In addition the donation will cover the costs for the sponsored children to attend the annual zoo trip, receive an Easter gift and participate in the annual Christmas party.

Please contact Liza@readforafrica.com if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.

Lessons this week

MONDAY 11 JUNE 2018

The learners should be grouped in the various classes before we arrive and we will continue with lessons as usual with the Grade 3s.

On Monday, we will

  • Hand out the books and name tags to each learner.
  • Team leaders and volunteers to greet the learners and play any ice breaker games - e.g. Simon Says, Kiddies Yoga etc.
  • Activities will include:
    • Phono-Graphix reading and spelling activities differentiated per group. I've attached a basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons  for the pink and blue levels of the programme (working with 3 and 4 sound words) as well as an information sheet on the method. These are the basic steps that are currently being following in the Pink, Blue and Green groups where we are revising 3 sound words such as cat, cot, bug, van etc. The Purple Group are doing the same except with 4 sound words  such as desk, plum, frog.  The Orange Group are working on slightly more advanced words where sound are represented with more than one letter such as the sh, ch, th, qu.
    • Some revision of the sounds covered last term will be done at the start of the lesson and new work will be introduced. Groups for Monday:
      • Pink Group with Jenny in Ms Mphahlele’s class (3B)
      • Blue Group with Gillean in the Container class room
      • Green Group with Liza and Ms Mphaka in the Library
      • Purple Group with Sachi in Ms Dladla's class (3A)
      • Orange Group with Meghan in Ms Mphaka's class (3C).
Where possible we like to encourage volunteers to work with the same group of children each week to encourage consistency and so that one can build up a rapport with specific leaners. However, there may be times where we need to re-allocate volunteers if we are short of volunteers on a particular day.

We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 11am.

TUESDAY 12 JUNE 2018

Volunteers will continue to work with the same small groups of children building 3 sound words. A basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons for the pink and blue levels of the programme is attached. The Pink and blue levels focus on 3 and 4 sound words.

Our Tuesday Programme has expanded and we are now accommodating every child in the Grade in the hope that all Grade 2s can be exposed to Phono-Graphix this year before reaching Grade 3. The more we can expose the Grade 2s to this year, the more time we can spend on more advanced reading and spelling in Grade 3 including comprehension, creative writing etc. to ensure a seamless transition to Grade 4 where all learning areas are offered in English and children need to be able to "read to learn" as opposed to "learn to read".

St Peter's interns have all been trained in the programme and will be working with Grade 2 learners in small groups from 8am to 10am every Tuesday as they work towards their international certification as Independent Phono-Graphix Reading Therapists. Jenny will be going straight to the school every Tuesday for 8am, but the group will as usual at 8:30am at Piatto's.

Most of the volunteers meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 10:30am.

If any volunteers would like to assist at DCS for the 2 hours and work with two consecutive groups of kids, from 8am to 9am and then the usual 9am to 10am, please contact Jenny to make arrangements.

Please continue to "Spread a Little Love" when you can on Mondays

We continue to make peanut butter sandwiches as well donate bags of apples every Monday to supplement the school's feeding programme. Please assist when you can by bringing a loaf of sandwiches and/or a bag of apples.  Thank you to our volunteers as well as the AKA Sorority for their consistent support of this project.

Whilst having qualified doctors and dentists and other health practitioners on the team is a bonus, one does not need to be qualified to assist.

Farewell and Happy Holidays

It's that sad time of year again when we start to say farewell to several people.

Some of you are moving on to your next location or back home permanently. We wish you safe travels and look forward to staying in touch.

Some of you who will be away for your "Summer" and our local volunteers may take some time off in the upcoming holidays too, so we hope you all have a good break. We look  forward to working with you in the new term.

Hopefully we will still see some of you on Monday and Tuesday and at the Holiday Programme, but know that many of you are already away.

Thank you to Catarina, Anette, Deepa and Carolien for your contribution to Edu Fun - all the best for your last few days / weeks in Johannesburg as you prepare to move back home or onto the next destination. :-)

Please see our "Dates to Diarise" below and contact Jenny on 082 322 0608 or reply to this email if you have any general queries.
