Our last lessons for the term take place this coming week on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th March 2018.
Please note "Dates to Diarise" at the end of this newsletter. Our lesson plans for the coming week are also described below.
We have a number of new interested volunteers who have joined us over the last few weeks and have been added to our mailing list. I've therefore attached an overview of Edu Fun and the various projects that we're involved in.
HELP US CELEBRATE SOUTH AFRICA LIBRARY WEEK THIS WEEK
South Africa Library Week is March 16-23, 2018 and similar to last year Edu Fun and DCS librarian Benedict Masipa are organising a reading contest to promote the use of the school library. The school library is an amazing facility and we hope this contest encourages some of the younger learners to begin visiting and using the library. To this end this year we have added a new separate contest for the grade 3 learners.
The Edu Fun volunteers will share the details of the contest with the grade 3 learners at the close of the Edu Fun lesson on Monday 12 March.
Grade 3 learners will be encouraged to go to the library to sign up to participate in the contest. They will sign up to read or tell a story to Ben. Those grade 3 learners who sign up and make an effort to read and/or tell a story will be given the opportunity to choose a prize. Edu Fun will provide a bag of about 30 prizes including unique and fun pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, etc.
Edu Fun will also provide Ben with ten "top reader prizes" for the non-grade 3 learners who read the most during the contest time frame. Edu Fun will provide watches (coloured plastic variety from Game) and pencil cases filled with school supplies for a total of ten of these prizes.
Finally we would like to provide 20 prizes for non-grade 3's and non-top overall readers. These could be water bottles or mugs filled with sweets or another creative idea.
Volunteers who wish to donate prizes or cash to support the contest may give to Edu Fun via EFT (reference library contest with your surname) or in cash on a Monday or a Tuesday. Actual prize donations are also encouraged and welcomed. Prizes will be needed by March 12 (Monday). Please give prizes to Jenny as she will compile and fill in any holes before providing to Ben.
Ben will provide photos back to Edu Fun that we can put into our newsletter and share with prize donors etc.
Thank you for your support.

Lessons this week
MONDAY 12 MARCH 2018
The learners should be grouped in the various classes before we arrive and we will continue with lessons as usual with the Grade 3s.
On Monday, we will
Hand out the books and name tags to each learner. If there is a learner in your class who does not have a book, it either means that the learner is in the wrong group or has started at the school in the last week. Please check the master list and try and send that learner to the correct group.
Team leaders and volunteers to greet the learners and play any ice breaker games - e.g. Simon Says, Kiddies Yoga etc.
Activities will include:
Phono-Graphix reading and spelling activities differentiated per group. I've attached a basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons as well as an information sheet on the method.
The "Months of the year" and the "Days of the week" can be revised and the Orange group will also have an Easter Crossword Puzzle to complete.
South Africa Library Week will be explained to the learners and they will be encouraged to visit the library as per the plan described above.
Each learner will receive an Easter Egg.
Groups for Monday:
Pink Group with Jenny in Ms Mphahlele’s class (3B)
Blue Group with Gillean in the Container class room
Green Group with Ms Mphaka in the Library
Purple Group with Sachi in Ms Dladla's class (3A)
Orange Group usually with Meghan, will be led by Karen Harland, with the help of the other volunteers in Ms Mphaka's class (3C).
Where possible we like to encourage volunteers to work with the same group of children each week to encourage consistency and so that one can build up a rapport with specific leaners. However, there may be times where we need to re-allocate volunteers if we are short of volunteers on a particular day.
We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 11am.
TUESDAY 13 MARCH 2018 Volunteers will continue to work with the same small groups of children building 3 sound words. This will continue for the next two weeks and then we will re-evaluate and re-group a few learners in the new term.
I've attached a basic lesson plan on the 4 key Phono-Graphix lessons as well as an information sheet on the method.
We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30am and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 10:30am.
Each of the Tuesday volunteers have kindly agreed to bring a "marshmallow" Easter egg for each of the learners that they work with.
Volunteer Training completed at St Peter’s School this week
Thank you to St Peter’s School for hosting a Phono-Graphix workshop this week and to June Tromp and Leigh Lidgey for making the necessary arrangements.
It was great to have so many Edu Fun volunteers in attendance as well as St Peter's parents who volunteer at Sefikeng as well as all the St Peter's interns. It is great that all the "Buddy Readers" on the various programmes will all be on the "same page" working towards the same goals using the same methodology.
All the attendees this week have the opportunity to pursue the certification as a Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist. A note will go out to the individual attendees as soon as the assessment workshop date is set.
All volunteers who volunteer at Diepsloot Combined and Sefikeng are always welcome to attend any of our courses, at no charge especially if you would like additional or more in-depth training in our method. Everyone who attends training also has an opportunity to pursue the international certification as a Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist for a nominal fee. Go to www.readforafrica.com for more information or contact me directly.
The Top Up Project - Mending School Uniforms
Karin and Veronika have started the "Top Up" Project at DCS and will mending school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They welcome volunteers from 10am to 12:30pm every Tuesday.
Karin and Veronika are appealing to our volunteer community to assist them in their preparations for Winter and have asked to keep them in mind if you have any of the following items that are used but in good condition
Black/blue/navy socks, stockings, thick leggings,
Long johns, thermo tops,
Long or short sleeve T-shirts to be worn under a school shirt
Thank you to our wonderful and generous donors Amber Salman, Lindsey Fenthum, Abbi Davenport (and her parents Peter and Sue), Avra Spyrides and Leslie Randolph for recently sponsoring Edu Fun learners.
All of our Edu Fun volunteers display tremendous commitment and dedication to helping DCS students improve reading, writing and spelling skills. In addition to teaching the Phono-Graphix method, volunteers and learners form bonds throughout the year not only during lessons but through social Edu Fun activities such as the zoo trip and annual Christmas party.
The hard work of Edu Fun volunteers is reaping rewards for learners. In 2017 assessment scores showed that over the course of the school year grade 3 student reading skills improved by 60% and spelling skills improved by 73%.
Volunteers who form bonds with specific learners are welcome to select the children (by name) who they would like to sponsor. If you have friends or contacts who don't come to school with us or who live abroad who might be interested in sponsoring a child or children, we can also put together photos and bios of learners and we are happy to update donors with information about the progress of those they have sponsored at various points throughout the school year.
A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs Edu Fun incurs for stationery, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year. In addition the donation will cover the costs for the sponsored children to attend the annual zoo trip, receive an Easter gift and participate in the annual Christmas party.
Please contact Liza@readforafrica.com if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.
Please continue to "Spread a Little Love" when you can on Mondays
We continue to make peanut butter sandwiches as well donate bags of apples every Monday to supplement the school's feeding programme. Please assist when you can by bringing a loaf of sandwiches and/or a bag of apples.
FEP STUDENT - items for new home needed
Beauty, one of our FEP students has moved into an unfurnished flat and would appreciate any donations of household essentials such as: tea kettle, microwave, fridge, and any other items that you may no longer need. She is especially hopeful for a fridge so that she can save money by being able to buy in bulk.
One of our FEP students, Sharon was mugged and all her personal items were taken, including her phone and a jacket. If anyone has an old phone in good working order that she could have, it would be greatly appreciated.
