We now meet at at 8:30am on a Tuesday in the parking lot outside Piatto's at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre. We leave a few minutes after 8:30 so that we're able to get to the school for a 9am start.

We will continue to
  • build (segment); manipulate; read  (blend) words in the Pink and/or Blue levels working with 3 and 4 sound work
  • Anthea holds a 'Baby Club' meeting directly after this session and she has asked if some of the usual volunteers can stay on a bit longer than usual and assist her until about 11am. Please see details below.

Final Food Distribution for 2017 - unless the school changes this date due to end of term activities.

3) SATURDAY BUDDY READER PROGRAMME - TOMORROW!

Deepa Rai, one of our Tuesday volunteers will be working with the school and Edu Fun to co-ordinate a Saturday Buddy Reading programme with a group of Grade 3 learners at Diepsloot Combined School for the final term.

This is a good opportunity for

  1. The Grade 3 learners who are a bit behind with their reading to get a boost before the end of the year.
  2. Potential volunteers who work or go to  school in the week to get involved on a weekend
  3. Current volunteers to involve their spouses and children in volunteer work.
  4. High school children to clock their "community hours" which are compulsory at several schools.
  5. Reading Therapists in training to gain practical experience and meet their internship requirements whilst providing 1:1 or small group reading instruction to children who would not be able to afford private lessons, which is a real – win-win.

The programme started on Saturday and will run until Saturday 18 November 2017. (5 sessions until the end of year).

PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING EVEN IF ITS JUST FOR ONE  ONE SATURDAY MORNING THIS YEAR.

Times: 10am (Leave Dainfern at 9:30 and back in Dainfern by 12pm)

We will meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9:30am on Saturdays and car pool to the school.

Please email Deepa on deepa_rai@hotmail.com should you want to sign up for this programme.

Thank you to those of you who are able to join us on
day 1 of the programme last week.

4) ON-GOING WISH LIST - FEP STUDENTS

General Needs - FEP students
Smart phones, laptops and toiletries are items that are needed by most students. It is difficult to get second hand lap tops as they are often destroyed to protect confidential data and software. If you're able to access working lap tops where the hard drives have been removed, we will still be able to use them as buying a hard drive is cheaper than buying a new lap top.

5) BIG THANK YOU TO GILLEAN AND HER FRIENDS FROM SCOTLAND WHO MADE MONDAY A VERY SPECIAL DAY FOR MANY PEOPLE!

Christine, David, Callum and Anna joined the
Blue Group on Monday

We were very pleased to welcome back Christine, David, Callum and Anna from Scotland, who came to school two years ago when they last visited Gillean.

They kindly brought with them a donation of £200 to Edu Fun, raised by Belmont Primary School in Stranraer.

Christine’s P5 children from Belmont each wrote a letter to the Edu Fun blue group and the replies will go back with Christine to her class.

The soccer strips and medals were donated by Millennium F.C. Stranraer and the t-shirts were from F.C. Twente, a Dutch team who have a close association with Stranraer F.C.

Finally - thank you to Sue Huck for being our resident photographer and for always making such an effort to support every initiative when in South Africa. Travel back safely to the UK this weekend and all the best for your mom's 90th Birthday!

Thank you for all the behind the scenes work that you do for Edu Fun and for the continued support from both Andrew and you!

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thank you
Jenny
