Food Pantry Newsletter

Food Pantry Newsletter 16 October 2017
Hello Visitor,

I have received many inquiries regarding the Food Pantry and the monthly distribution of food to the child-headed households at Diepsloot Combined School. So I wanted to take a moment to share a few more details so everyone has them.

Let me start by saying that the Food Pantry is officially named Ngangifisa which is Zulu for “I dreamed of”. Our main goal and promise is to feed the children by providing a months worth of groceries each month, but we also strive to be able to provide them with the things that they can only dream of. The things that many of us take for granted…shoes that fit properly, winter jackets or a warm blanket for the bed.

The support from so many of you over the last year has been truly amazing and I am eternally grateful. We have been able to positively impact 14 families. Within the 14 families that we support there are 103 children ranging in age from 3 to 18. We have not only provided food for them monthly but we have been able to provide household items, clothing, toiletries and new school uniforms. Because of your generosity and willingness to spread the word, the donations we receive have enabled us to continue to raise money and build up a solid base that will keep our project alive for years to come.

We are always in need of food donations. Below is a list of what is provided monthly to the families. If you or someone you know is looking to contribute in any way, giving any of the listed food items would be extremely helpful. They can be dropped off in front of Piatto’s where we meet for school on either Monday or Tuesday mornings.

Each household receives the following:

  • 10kg bag of pap
  • 1 package of spaghetti
  • 2kg bag of samp
  • 2kg bag of sugar
  • 4 cans of baked beans
  • 2 cans of tuna or chicken
  • 2 cans of pilchards
  • 3 cans of Braai Relish
  • 4 cans of vegetables (mixed or any specific kind is fine)
  • 1 large jar of peanut butter
  • 1 box Rooibos Tea
  • 1 large box of Jungle Oats or some kind or Porridge

Again, that is the basic list we always provide. All 14 families know that no matter what they will receive those items each month.

We meet with the eldest in each household on the last Wednesday of every month to pass out the groceries.

We welcome anyone who would like to join us for one of the monthly handouts! We meet in Diepsloot at the school at 10am.

Whether it is donating items or simply spreading the word about this program, your continued support is very much appreciated.
