Hello Visitor,

This week's newsletter includes

2)  Lesson details for Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th September 2017.
We say goodbye to one of our Tuesday volunteers.

3)  Wish List for FEP learners needing assistance

The Zoo trip is scheduled for Monday 11 SEPTEMBER 2017.

Thank you to BUS 2000 who have given us a 50% discount on the third bus!

We will meet at the Zoo at 9:30am on Monday 11 September and will be finished by 12pm as the busses will be departing at 12pm as well.

Volunteers are asked to pay their own entrance fee on the day as well as bring their own packed lunch for their own snacks.

Please invite your friends to assist on the day or if you have children who are old enough to chaperone a group of Grade 3s, we would be most grateful for any additional help that we can get.

We have also discovered that the American school have that day off - this might mean that more of you can't assist or perhaps it frees up your teenagers to assist us too :-)

Times:             Meet the in the parking lot at 9:30am
                        Leave at 12pm.

Entrance Fee:  R37 per person (school group discount)

Parking Fee:    R10 per car

We've been advised that the new parking building is open and that the busses and cars need to park at the main entrance on Upper Park Drive. Click here for directions to the zoo and a map.

We almost have lunch sorted for the children, teachers and bus drivers thank you to my mom, Lucy (a busy bee behind the scenes who has also organised free entrance into the Zoo for the kids). Thank you to my good friend Preethi Mistri who facilitated 180 yoghurts being donated.

We will provide the following:
  • 1 orange per child (donation confirmed)
  • 1 coke per child (donation request in progress otherwise we will buy juice)
  • 1 yoghurt per child (donation confirmed)
  • 1 treat (lollipop/fizzer bought from Makro unless sponsored)PLUS one peanut butter (AND APRICOT JAM) sandwich per child made by volunteers (Thank you Gillean, Sachi, Ogechi and Chantal).
If anyone has any contacts for any treats - it would be great if we could give each child a sucker (lollipop or fizzer or similar) on the day as well.

MONDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2017 - Grade 3 Lesson

We will meet as usual at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre outside Piatto at 9am on Monday.

Our them this week is "DON'T GET LOST"  where a discussion around finger prints will be followed by children actually making their own thumb print using ink from an ink pad (if I can source enough ink pads ... otherwise we will do this in some of the classes and rotate in future lessons)

The Green and Purple groups will
- continue to revise the sounds covered to date and discriminate between sounds that are confused such as the "ee" and "i".
- continue to write and edit their work

Blue Group
- continue introducing the concept that some sound pictures have more than one letter - new sound [ck] to be introduced so that children start to realise that there are several ways to show the "k" sound such as the [c] and [k] covered already.

Pink Group
- continue with 3 and 4 sound words
- the basic "Pink" level lesson plans for the 4 lessons that we cover within a lesson are attached for your perusal - especially for new volunteers which are also relevant for the Tuesday lessons.

WE CONTINUE TO "SPREAD A LITTLE LOVE" ON MONDAYS WHERE WE PROVIDE PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES AND/OR A BAG OF APPLES FOR THE KIDS AT DCS.  Click here to find out how we prepare the sandwiches if this is your first time.

TUESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2017 - Grade 2 Lesson

**** NOTE ******
I will be conducting an informal workshop with a few new volunteers on Tuesday the 4th after the session. We will meet at Piatto after the session 10:20 / 10:30 where I will go over the basic principles behind the Phono-Graphix Reading method and discuss the basic lessons plans and how we teach phonetically. The workshop will be about 1 hour long.

***** Now meeting at 8:30am on Tuesdays ****

We now meet at Piatto's at 8:30am on a Tuesday so that we're able to get to the school for a 9am start.

We will continue to
  • build (segment); manipulate; read  (blend) words in the Pink and/or Blue levels working with 3 and 4 sound words.
  • Follow the lessons "word building", "phoneme deletion", "word reading" and "word spelling".
  • The basic "Pink" level lesson plans for the 4 lessons to cover within a lesson are attached for your perusal - especially for new volunteers.

We said goodbye to SMITA who spent her last morning at DCS this past week. She heads back to INDIA in a few weeks' time.

Thank you Smita for your contribution to the programme while you were in South Africa. I look forward to continuing our conversations about teaching reading in Mumbai.

General Needs - FEP students
Smart phones, laptops and toiletries are items that are needed by most students. It is difficult to get second hand lap tops as they are often destroyed to protect confidential data and software. If you're able to access working lap tops where the hard drives have been removed, we will still be able to use them as buying a hard drive is cheaper than buying a new lap top.

Practical Experience / Internships required
Our FEP students who are finalising their studies are in desperate need of practical experience and need to do an internship in order to meet the requirements of their degree or diploma.

Please share the information below as well as the CVs attached if you have any contacts who might be able to facilitate an internship for the following students.

Lolo an FEP student is completing a Diploma in Office Management and Technology and is needing 9 weeks of practical experience. His work integrated learning experience can be at any kind of company and he's available to start immediately, however he does attend classes on Mondays and Thursdays.  If you know of any firm that might take Lolo on for 9 weeks of practical experience, please let us know and we can forward his CV to you.

Gladwin is also an FEP student looking for an opportunity to complete an internship in Information Technology.
Specifications include: Minimum of 6 months internship in any IT related company specialising in Software Development.

See CV attached.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thank you
