Monday is our final day at DCS for the term. The Grade 3 party will take place from 9:30m to 10:30am on Monday 12 November 2018.
Please join us for coffee and/or a meal after the year end party on Monday 12 November. It would be great to have a small get together before the holidays and chat about plans for 2019. The invitation is open to all our volunteers across all the projects (Literacy Monday & Tuesday, Health, Sewing, Food Pantry, The Baby Club).
We should be back at Piatto's after the Grade 3 party by 11:15/11:30am.As with all our volunteer gatherings, volunteers will be requested to pay for their own food/drinks.
If you still have your name tag and holder, please bring it with you on Monday. We will take all the name tags in and return them in the new year with our new logo!
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the assessment process over the last few weeks. We are so appreciative of your input and commitment to this somewhat tedious task. Many volunteers stayed extra or came on additional days and even helped us at another school.
We are so excited by the results and the continued opportunity to learn and grow from the trends picked up whilst evaluating the assessments. Thank you to Karen Stowells, our resident accountant who continues to capture and analyse all this data!
We will share as much of the progress with you at our end of year get together on Monday but a detailed report will follow before the end of year.
Grade 3 Party on Monday 12 November 2018
Volunteers meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and we should be back at Piatto's by 11:15am.
Thank you to Liza for co-ordinating the gifts donated for the Grade 3 Holiday Party. Rebecca Kemp Pogir and the Hakuna Matata House have generously donated over 200 colouring books and Nan, Hayley, Judy and Leslie who have donated cash towards the pencil crayon sets that we are purchasing.
We are still seeking some cash donations to make up the balance required to purchase the pencil crayon sets, if anyone is in a position to donate. R100 buys 5 pencil case sets.
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, a Grade 4 learner recently approached us and proudly informed us that she still has her colouring in book from last year, so we know that this gift gives hours of pleasure to the kids.
Thanks in advance for your help!
My School Programme - Edu Fun is now an official beneficiary.
Thank you to all of you who registered for the My School programme or chose to change your beneficiary to Edu Fun. We are excited to announce that Edu Fun met all the requirements and is now a registered beneficiary.
My School are still processing all of our applications and your details will be updated and you will be sent a new card if you requested it. Liza will be emailing those of you who already have a Woolworths card so that you can link your card independently.
Opportunity for companies to make a donation before their financial year-end.
Many companies have their financial year finishing on 31 December. This often means that they are looking to support charities around this time as they need to use up their CSI budgets.
If you do have any corporate contacts, it would be great if you reminded them about Edu Fun and the work that we do. Please let them know that we are BEE compliant and can issue Tax certificates.
Please follow this link for more information or to see how you can make a donation.
Our official registration numbers etc. are available on this page. http://edufunsa.co.za/index.php/donating.
Please email email@example.com if you would like additional information or supporting documents. Use our new Payfast link to Sponsor a Learner (or Multiple Learners) at DCS. As we still have a few expenses left to cover this year’s parties as well as stationery costs in preparation for the new term, please consider sponsoring a learner or making a donation before the end of year.
Follow this link to see which learners you can still sponsor this year. http://edufunsa.co.za/index.php/sponsor.
A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs that Edu Fun has incurred this year for stationery, worksheets, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year including the upcoming year end party. We have several learners who have been sponsored through this initiative via the GlobalGiving campaign. The GlobalGiving platform has made it very easy for our supporters who live abroad (or have bank accounts abroad :-) to make donations using their credit card. You can also make a donation via GlobalGiving at this link: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/teaching-africa-to-read/
Please contact Liza@readforafrica.com if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.
Further Education Programme (FEP) - wish list for university students from DCS
We will be collecting donations of clothing, household items, cellphones, and laptops for our university students this week until mid January. If you, your family, friends, or neighbors would like to recycle items that you no longer need to a good cause, we will happily pass them on. These donations make a big difference to our students and are always very much appreciated.
DCS Matric Dance - Outfits needed
We are collecting matric dance dresses or formal clothing for the boys again this year. Last year our volunteers did an amazing collection of formal attire and Learner Support teacher, Betty, has saved those items for this year’s matrics. We are short of a few sizes for the girls: 1 x size 44; 3 x size 42; 3 x 38 and 2 x 36. We could always use formal clothing for the boys.
In-depth Phono-Graphix Reading courses for volunteers
An increasing number of volunteers are showing an interest in learning more about the Phono-Graphix reading method and completing our more in-depth course to be able to pursue the international certification as an Independent Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist.
We still have space on Melanie's last course for the year being run over 3 mornings starting next week in Randburg. I've attached the detailed information sheet. We don't charge regular Edu Fun volunteers to do the course, but if you would like the certification you would need to purchase a facilitator guide and pay a nominal fee for the certification. The course dates are Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Tuesday 20th November. The times are 9am to 1pm on each of these days.
Melanie, from PsychAssess who conducted the assessment workshop a few weeks ago will be the trainer. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to register or find out more information.
Ngangifisa and the Food Pantry
Ngangifisa usually distribute monthly groceries to a group of the most vulnerable families in Diepsloot on the last Wednesday of each month. Many of these children have lost one or both parents and in some cases come from child headed homes.
Karin and Veronica run the "Top Up" Project at DCS with Nopinki and Tinyiko who are past pupils. This group mend school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They welcome volunteers from 10am to 12:30pm every Tuesday. They have recently added a new service to their offerings .... Shoe Polishing which will help protect the shoes for longer and also give some of the school shoes a face lift before needing to be replaced altogether! To see what Veronika and Karin are up to, follow them on Facebook by clicking on this link.
Health Project - Meets on Tuesdays
Please contact Arlene and Dominique on email@example.com if you would like more information about the Health Club and how you can get involved in the new term.
This group does eyesight and dental checks with the learners as well as provide nutritional and other guidance.
Whilst having qualified doctors and dentists and other health practitioners on the team is a bonus, one does not need to be qualified to assist.
Contact Jenny on 082 322 0608 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any general queries.
You can also contact the relevant person mentioned above for specific projects or events.
