Edu Fun activities/assessments continue on Monday 22 October and Tuesday 23 October 2018.
We have had an incredibly exciting week assessing Grade 2 and 3 learners at Diepsloot Combined and Sefikeng Schools. It's been great to see the progress that has been made over the year. It was also good for our volunteers to see how the learners have progressed and what a difference early intervention in Grade 2 can make.
We will resume with assessments this coming week. Santa Shoe Box is due at the school on Monday and will be handing out over 600 gifts to the Grade R, 1, 2 and 3 children at DCS.
If you missed our assessment workshop, or will be joining us for the first time this week, you can glance through the attached guidelines. However, we will also spend 5 minutes going over these assessments when we are at DCS and anyone who has not done them before or would like a refresher is welcome to buddy up with someone else to observe before doing it on their own.
Thank you Melanie Smith from PsychAssess and Karen Harland who are frantically working behind the scenes to capture the date and crunch the numbers in time for Read for Africa's conference next Saturday 27 October.
Invitation to attend the Read For Africa conference next Saturday. 27 October 2017 at Pinnacle College Kyalami (previously known as Summit College).
Many volunteers have asked about our Read For Africa Conference taking place on 27 October. Volunteers are welcome to register and attend as the conference is relevant for anyone interested in literacy who would like to learn more about the greater impact of our volunteerism.
We will present details of the unique and ground breaking model that all of you are part of - our RFA and EF partnership with St. Peter's and Diepsloot Combined School. We believe this model can be replicated across the country and the continent to achieve our audacious goal of Teaching Africa to read.
It will also be a good opportunity to learn more about teaching reading using the Phono-Graphix reading method.
Please consider volunteering on both Mondays and Tuesdays for the next few weeks. We have a mammoth task ahead of us and need to assess approximately 400 learners in 3 weeks. Even if you are not a regular volunteer we will be grateful for any extra help even if you can only attend once.
We will be assessing learners at DCS on the following days
Mondays (DCS Grade 3):
Monday 29 October and 5 November 2018 meet at Piatto's at 9am
*** Note: We most likely won't do assessments on Monday 22 October due to
Santa Shoe box distributing the boxes.
Tuesdays (DCS Grade 2):
23, 30 October and 6 November 2018 meet at Piatto's at 8:30am
Wednesdays (Sefikeng Grade 2):
24 October 2018 - meet at Lonehill Shopping Centre at 8am.
Use our new Payfast link to Sponsor a Learner (or Multiple Learners) at DCS
Follow this link to see which learners you can still sponsor this year. http://edufunsa.co.za/index.php/sponsor.
A donation of R500 per child will cover all costs that Edu Fun has incurred this year for stationery, worksheets, books and supplies needed to teach that child throughout the year including the upcoming year end party.
We have several learners who have been sponsored through this initiative via the GlobalGiving campaign. The GlobalGiving platform has made it very easy for our supporters who live abroad (or have bank accounts abroad :-) to make donations using their credit card. You can also make a donation via GlobalGiving at this link:
Please contact Liza@readforafrica.com if you would like to find out more or if you would like to contribute to this initiative.
Lessons continue this week on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 October 2018.
MONDAY 22 OCTOBER 2018
Santa Shoebox are due to distribute gifts to over 600 kids on Monday. We will discuss the finalised plan on Monday at Piatto's.
We meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 9am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 11am.
Please read the instructions attached to remind you of the process. There is also an answer sheet attached which shows you how the assessment sheets need to be filled out and a cue card which you will use with each learner.
We will be doing our usual Read For Africa (RFA) assessment (page 1) that we did at the start of the year as well as a PARAS assessment (page 2). You are welcome to shadow someone on Monday if you would like to see how to do the assessment first.
Volunteers meet at Dainfern Valley Shopping Centre at 8:30am outside Piatto's and car pool to Diepsloot and are usually back in Dainfern by 10:30am.
Ngangifisa and the Food Pantry
Ngangifisa usually distribute monthly groceries to a group of the most vulnerable families in Diepsloot on the last Wednesday of each month. Many of these children have lost one or both parents and in some cases come from child headed homes.
The next Food Distribution will be on Wednesday 31 October at 11am in the school hall.
Karin and Veronika run the "Top Up" Project at DCS with Nopinki and Tinyiko who are past pupils. This group mend school uniforms on a weekly basis after our Tuesday Buddy Reader Programme. They welcome volunteers from 10am to 12:30pm every Tuesday.
They have recently added a new service to their offerings .... Shoe Polishing which will help protect the shoes for longer and also give some of the school shoes a face lift before needing to be replaced altogether!
Please contact Arlene and Dominique on email@example.com if you would like more information about the Health Club and how you can get involved in the new term. This group does eyesight and dental checks with the learners as well as provide nutritional and other guidance.
Whilst having qualified doctors and dentists and other health practitioners on the team is a bonus, one does not need to be qualified to assist.
