Thank you to St Peter's Preparatory School  for providing the lovely venue for this event.

Whilst Edu Fun’s focus remains teaching literacy to Grade 2 and 3 learners at Diepsloot combined School, we work with a wonderful team of people who have identified additional barriers to learning at the school. Not only have these barriers to learning been identified, but many of our volunteers have initiated or continued to run programmes that reduce/eliminate these barriers for many learners in terms of providing food, health screenings, and school uniforms.

All our partner projects will be working together and all funds will be distributed equally across all projects. We look forward to collaborating with many of you as we work towards common goals - raising funds to reduce / eliminate as many barriers to learning at Diepsloot Combined School whether it be to provide food, conduct health screenings, provide uniforms, teach reading and/or provide a multi-purpose hub to house all these activities.

Each year, Edu Fun organises three special programmes designed to provide the DCS learners with fun new experiences. We rely on donations to cover the costs of these events. If you would like to donate toward our Holiday Programme, Zoo Trip or Christmas Party, please visit our donation page.

Holiday Reading, Art and Sport Programme

During the June holiday period, Edu Fun and St Peter's School partner with Read For Africa and Diepsloot Combined School who lead a three day Holiday Buddy Reading, Art and Sport Programme for a group of learners from Grade 2 and 3 at Diepsloot Combined School. This programme costs R300 per person to run.

In 2018, 99 learners attended the holiday programme. Each day, the students enjoyed three days of one on one customised reading lessons as well as daily art and sport sessions.  The programme is provided free of charge to the students thanks to many generous individual and corporate cash and in-kind donors as well as many volunteers who give of their time to make the programme possible. The children who attend receive breakfast, lunch and snacks each day and get prizes and other gifts.

We are very grateful for the extraordinary support we receive from St. Peter’s School to make the holiday programme possible each year. St. Peter’s interns play a vital role throughout the programme through their leadership of the children as well as helping with the reading programme and assisting with the art and sports sessions.

Annual Zoo Trip
Young students living in Diepsloot do not often have the chance to travel outside of the area. The annual trip to the Joburg Zoo provides young students with a chance to enjoy time to run in the grass, enjoy fresh air and see exotic animals. Each year in September, Edu Fun volunteers take the entire grade 3 class from DCS to the zoo for a fun morning of animal viewing followed by lunch. Edu Fun covers all costs for the day including transportation, entry fee, lunch and drinks. Volunteers take the students around the zoo in small groups to view the animals.

Christmas Party
Each November, prior to the end of the school year, Edu Fun hosts a holiday party and graduation ceremony for the grade 3 students. Lunch is generously provided by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Each student also receives a goodie bag filled with small gifts and sometimes Father Christmas even makes an appearance.
